What
is Tournament Quality?
|
| |
|
| |
Back in 1985, Pennington
Seed embarked on a vigorous variety and seed quality improvement program
when Pennington's founder and other members of the company's management
team determined that the market for lawn seed was rapidly growing. |
| |
|
|
| |
Consumers were becoming
more aware of the aesthetic value and personal satisfaction of maintaining
a nice home landscape. Developments in seed varieties, as a direct result
of the Plant Variety Protection Act in the early 1970's, dramatically improved
the performance, look, and feel of new and/or renovated lawns. |
| |
|
|
| |
The production of
most of these new varieties was developing in the Pacific Northwest with
the majority being grown in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. As the market
grew rapidly, the production of seed in Oregon grew from about 30% of the
world's total annual production of grass seed to just over 50% by the mid-1990's. |
| |
|
|
| |
During this same
20-25 year time span, the worldwide production of grass seed grew from less
than 500 million pounds annually to 1½ billion pounds each year.
Consumption in the United States has accounted for most of this growth as
homeowners improved their lawns, landscapers and lawn care professionals
grew their businesses, golf courses expanded rapidly, and sports fields
sprang up all across the country. |
| |
|
|
| |
Prior to Pennington
Seed's quality improvement program, most of the products in the homeowner
marketplace were poor quality blends that contained a majority of annual
ryegrass. While annual ryegrass is a good choice for the gardener that wants
a very quick fix to a construction site or an area that has been damaged
recently, it does not provide an appealing turf over time. |
| |
|
|
| |
Consumers were becoming
more discriminating in their preferences and Pennington Seed knew that presenting
high quality products at an affordable price would lead to rapid growth
in sales for both Pennington Seed and its partners. |

TRIAL DATA: |
|
| |
Pennington Seed
has chosen to utilize The National Turfgrass Evaluation Program's variety
trials to help select varieties of seed that have strong performance across
a wide geographic region. (Add information here about how turfgrass is evaluated
and why the seed selected as TQ is proven to be better than other seed.) |

|
| |
AND NOW: |
|
| |
In 2003, Pennington
Seed introduced the most exciting new grass seed line, Tournament Quality
Brand, which includes 5 of the best products available to the consumer.
This line features only top varieties that are genetically and mechanically
purer than any other line currently available. |
| |
|
|
| |
This line is so
exceptional, it will carry the personal endorsement of George Toma, the
guru of turf, the consultant selected by the National Football League to
prepare and care for the playing field for all of the NFL Super Bowls to
date, making him the groundskeeper of the greatest shows on earth! |
