General Planting Instructions
  New Lawn Development
Pulverize the soil completely by spading or plowing. If soil tests have been conducted, apply fertilizer at the recommended rate. If soil tests have not been conducted, apply lime and a complete lawn fertilizer available at your Lawn & Garden dealer. Apply lime and fertilizer at recommended rates and according to directions. Work lime and fertilizer evenly into the soil then level the soil. Sow the grass seed; then rake, harrow, or otherwise work the seed into the soil no more than 1/4" to 1/2". Keep the area well watered until the seeds have germinated and the seedlings have grown sufficiently to establish a lawn, then water as needed.

  Overseeding or Reseeding
Fertilize as outlined above, except it is not necessary to work the fertilizer into the soil. Mow or clip the existing grass as closely as possible. Rake, harrow lightly, aerate or otherwise scarify the soil where the existing grass is growing to allow the seed to make contact with the soil. The existing grass will not be adversely affected.

Undesirable Lawn

When you have a lawn with undesirable grasses, you may use the following method or ridding your lawn of these grasses and establishing a desirable lawn.
1. During any growing season, spray the established undesirable lawn with a non-selective herbicide, labeled for lawn use, following the directions on the label.
2. After lawn turns brown, follow instructions under New Lawn Developement.

  Improving Bare Spots
First mow closely, then remove leaves, dead grass, etc. Rake bare spots to prepare the seed bed. Then follow fertilizer and planting instructions as outlined above.

For Best Results:

For best results, we recommend Pennington® brand Lawn Starter Fertilizer on new seedings and Pennington® brand lawn foods for follow-up fertilizations. These are quality Pennington® products and are available at most Lawn and Garden outlets. Should crabgrass or other objectionable weeds be a problem after you establish your lawn, Pennington® brand Weed and Feed, and Pennington¨ brand Crabgrass Preventer may be used following label instructions. Wait at least six weeks after seeding, or until your lawn is established, before using crabgrass preventer. In the event Pennington¨ brand fertilizers are not available, we recommend Gro Tec® manufactured fertilizers.
